From Scraps to Soil: Food Scrap Collection Program kicks off at Manzo Elementary

On November 25, representatives from the City of Tucson, Tucson Unified School District and Iskashitaa Refugee Network (IRN) came together at Manzo Elementary School to kick off the Scraps to Soil Program.

Scraps to Soil is a composting and food waste reduction project that supports the Resilient Together Climate Action Plan and Tucson’s 2022 Climate Emergency goals to reduce food waste, expand composting, and build community resilience. It also helps expand the FoodCycle program to low-income neighborhoods and schools, as well as promote long-term sustainable behavior through education and outreach.

Santa Rita Diesel

Arizona "Troops to Educators" Program

Gilbert Ochoa has a knack for teaching people. He served as a mentor to young airmen when he served in the Air Force, working on aircraft, and now he does it in a garage full of high school students.  â€‹

Arizona’s Troops to Educators program helped Ochoa move into the classroom by translating his military performance reports into a Career and Technical Education teaching certificate. When the Diesel Engine Repair position opened at Santa Rita, he knew it was a good opportunity to continue helping young people build real skills.

“It’s great to watch them get that sense of accomplishment when they complete a task they had been struggling with,” Ochoa said. “That ‘aha’ moment is something they usually do not forget.”
